Tyson Verhelst turned aside 33 shots, including all 13 in the third period, as the Spokane Chiefs notched their second straight win with a 3-1 victory over the Victoria Royals Tuesday night in Victoria, B.C. Hudson Elyniuk led the offense with a career high 2 goals as the Chiefs improved their record to 3-1 to take over first place in the U.S. Division with 6 points.

Neither team scored in the first period as the Chiefs and Royals put up 9 shots apiece. Spokane would break through when Kailer Yamamoto found Elyniuk open net front just 2:23 into the second to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Victoria would even the game on a power play goal at 17:05 of the second to tie it up 1-1. Spokane would notch the eventual game winner when Dominic Zwerger scored on a rebound with just 1.2 seconds left in the second to give the Chiefs a 2-1 edge heading to the third. Yamamoto notched his second assist of the night and now leads the league with 8 assists. Zwerger has now scored a goal in 3 straight games and has points in all 4 games this season.

Verhelst took over in the third, turning away all 13 shots the Royals threw at him, as Victoria kept the puck in the Chiefs zone for most of the last 10 minutes of the game. Spokane would finally put the game away when Elyniuk scored an empty netter from center ice from Zwerger in the last minute to wrap up a 3-1 win. Spokane was outshot 34-28, going 0-3 on the power play and 4-5 on the penalty kill.

The Chiefs will continue their road trip tomorrow night in Victoria as they face the Royals at 7:05pm. Mike Boyle will have the call on 1510 KGA beginning at 6:30pm.
