KENNEWICK, WA- The Tri-City Americans (1-1-1-1, 4 pts) took a lead in the first period, but the Kootenay Ice (1-0-0-0, 2 pts) tied the game in the third period and eventually won the game in a shootout, 2-1, to end day two of the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament at the Toyota Center.

Kootenay came out and got a majority of the chances to start the first period. But the momentum slowly turned in the Americans favor, and Tri-City got on the board late in the first on a goal from Tyler Sandhu. The Ice had the shot advantage 14-10 in the first, but the Americans had the lead going into the second.

The Ice outshot the Americans in the second period, 8-6. Tri-City kept Kootenay out of the net in the second period to maintain the 1-0 lead going into the third period.

In the third, Kootenay tied the game early in the period on a goal from Zak Zborosky. The Americans fired 19 shots at Wyatt Hoflin in the third, but couldn’t find twine, sending the game to overtime. The overtime 3-on-3 format flashed some excitement, with both teams having quality scoring chances, but it wasn’t enough to decide a winner, sending the game to a shootout.

Tri-City’s Morgan Geekie shot first and was stopped by Hoflin, followed by Kootenay’s Connor Barley scoring, putting the Ice ahead in the shootout. A miss by the Americans’ Kyle Olson and a score by the Ice’s Jared Legien gave Kootenay the victory.

The Americans spent 12 minutes in the penalty box and couldn’t score on any of its five power play chances. Kootenay was unsuccessful with four attempts with a man advantage and recorded 14 penalty minutes.

Wyatt Hoflin made 37 saves in the win for Kootenay. Beck Warm started in net for Tri-City, stopping all 18 shots he faced. Nicholas Sanders came in midway through the second and made 14 saves.

The Americans are back in action tomorrow against the Red Deer Rebels at 7:05 p.m. in the Toyota Center for day three of the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, including the Toyota Center Box Office, at any Fred Meyer outlet or online at
