Leach Names Luke Falk WSU's Starting QB

Luke Falk will start at quarterback for Washington State in Saturday's season opener against Portland State. Luke Falk will start at quarterback for Washington State in Saturday's season opener against Portland State.

Mike Leach has been hesitant to make a formal announcement about his starting quarterback all fall, but on Tuesday Coach Leach finally made it official. Sophomore Luke Falk will start the season as the Cougars’ quarterback.

“We'll play Falk, we'll start out with Falk,” said Leach.

For Falk, it will be his fourth career start at Washington State.

When asked whether both quarterbacks would play, Leach responded. “We'll see how it goes, Falk will start and of course Bender does a lot of good things, too.”

Freshman Peyton Bender is expected to see some playing time on Saturday, as the Cougars open the season in Pullman for the first time since 2011.

As a starter in 2014, Luke Falk finished with a record of 1-2. His lone win came against Oregon State when Falk threw for 471 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. The sophomore totaled 1859 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in his freshmen season.

Falk has seen the Portland State Vikings before when he played in last season’s match up. He had just two throws but one was an 84-yard touchdown pass to Dom Williams. It was Falk’s first collegiate touchdown pass.
