Both Sides Shine in WSU's 2nd Scrimmage

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State scrimmaged for nearly 90 plays at Martin Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Cougar offense scored five touchdowns including two on the ground, and defense tallied eight sacks and forced three turnovers. Redshirt-sophomore running back Jamal Morrow and freshman back James Williams each rushed for one touchdowns while junior River Cracraft paced the receivers with eight catches for 85 yards including an 18-yard touchdown. Redshirt-senior wideout Dom Williams and redshirt-junior Gabe Marks each caught touchdowns.

Redshirt-sophomore quarterback Luke Falk went 22-for-29 for 139 yards and two touchdowns and redshirt-freshman quarterback Peyton Bender went 18-of-23 for 129 yards and one touchdown. Freshman Tyler Hilinski went 8-of-13 for 80 yards.

Freshman wideout Tavares Martin Jr. nearly put the offense on the board during the opening drive, catching a short pass from Bender at the five-yard line and battled his way towards the end zone, eventually stretching the ball the across the goal line before the defense knocked it away. The play was ruled a fumble and touchback, taking the touchdown off the board. Martin Jr. finished the day with seven receptions for 39 yards.

Dom Williams put the offense on the board with a five-yard touchdown catch from Falk in the back of the end zone. The next drive saw the youngster James Williams turn in a couple highlight plays, the first coming after he caught a pass out of the back field, turned up field and hurdled a tackler bringing cheers from the offense and the attending fans. Williams capped the drive powering his way into the end zone from two-yard out.

Bender got things going a series later with a perfectly placed pass to Cracraft in traffic, just past a defender for an 18-yard touchdown. The ground game got going a little later as Morrow broke off a couple nice runs before bursting through the lane and outracing two defenders for a 25-yard touchdown run. The final drive of the day saw Falk connect with Marks in the end zone for a four-yard score.

The defense made things tough on the offense all afternoon, tallying eight sacks led by redshirt-freshman defensive lineman Kingston Fernandez and redshirt-senior defensive lineman Darryl Paulo who each recorded two. WSU also forced three fumbles on the day and produced a couple big hits from junior safety Shalom Luani and redshirt-sophomore safety Darius Lemora who each caused big defensive celebrations with a couple loud smacks.
