COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -- Hockey Fest Coeur d'Alene at Frontier Ice Arena ended with a successful Legends game presented by Kootenai Health as the "St. Louis" team led by Wayne Gretzky and former Spokane Chief Derek Ryan defeated "Tampa Bay" coached by Spokane's own Tyler Johnson 9-5.
The Great One finished with a goal and an assist in his limited ice time, still showing he can flick the stick and find the gaps with the best of them at the age of 54. His teammate for the night Ryan picked up two goals, one of which came on the assist from Gretzky.
Johnson's Lighting squad trailed 4-3 at the halftime intermission -- two halves were played for the charity exhibition -- and never quite caught up despite the efforts of reigning WHL Rookie of the Year Kailer Yamamoto, Kevin Sawyer, Russ Courtnall and Brandon Morrow.
Autographed jerseys and gift baskets full of Hockey Fest goodness were auctioned off via a raffle to raise money for local youth hockey. Youngsters were also able to learn from Johnson and former Chiefs star Mitch Holmberg on Thursday in the Hockey Fest Youth Hockey Clinic, more from that here: http://bit.ly/1Gbbbax
This was the second year of the event that is scheduled and trying to become an annual summer fixture at the Frontier Ice Arena. Last year it was a "Spokane Chiefs" team vs. a "Coeur d'Alene Lakers" in the inaugural Hockey Fest CdA. Going foward it will be two new NHL teams represented in the Legends game.
