Rays Select WSU Pitcher Triece In 10th Round

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State pitcher Sam Triece was selected in the tenth round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday.

Triece, a senior righthander from Edmonds, Wash., was taken as the No. 298 overall pick. The 6-2, 215 pound Triece went 5-0 and posted a 2.66 ERA in his team-leading 31 appearances including three starts this season. He recorded 59 strikeouts and held opposing hitters to a .222 batting average in 50 2/3 innings of work. Over his final 15 appearances dating back to April 7, Triece went 5-0 with a 0.31 ERA in 28 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on 10 hits and struck out 31 while holding opponents to a .108 batting average.

Triece joined Washington State after spending one season (2012) at Edmonds Community College. In his three seasons in a Cougar uniform, Triece made 65 appearances including a four starts. He tallied six wins and recorded 95 strikeouts in 97 1/3 innings while holding opponents to a .228 batting average. Triece was a three-time member of the WSU Athletics All-Academic team and a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection.
