PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University Director of Athletics Bill Moos announced Tuesday that baseball coach Donnie Marbut will not return to guide the Cougars next season.

“Though Donnie and his staff have worked hard over the past 11 years it is my feeling that a change in leadership at this time was necessary to get Cougar baseball back to a position of prominence,” said Moos.

Marbut recently completed his 11th season leading the Cougars, where he compiled a 314-304 record, the third-most wins in program history behind Bobo Brayton and Buck Bailey. This season he guided the Cougars to a 29-27 mark, 11-19 in Pac-12 play, the most wins by the program since going 37-22 in 2010.

During his career Marbut led the Cougars to 314 wins and two postseason appearances, those coming in 2009 and 2010. In 2010 WSU reached the Arkansas Regional title game before falling to the host and No. 15 Razorbacks. In addition, he coached 37 student-athletes at WSU who have been selected in the MLB Draft.

Marbut joined the Cougar coaching staff as an assistant in 2004, helping guide the team to a 29-26 record, WSU's first winning campaign since 1998. One year later he was named head coach by then-athletic director Jim Sterk.

"We will begin the process of naming the next head coach immediately," said Moos. "I will not be discussing details of the hiring process and expect to name the new coach as soon as possible.”
