SPOKANE, Wash. -- A few months ago Spokane's own Patrick Ferguson shocked USA Boxing when he won the 2015 National Championship here in the Lilac City out of nowhere. Now he's a top-ranked heavyweight fighter in the USA and is one step closer to achieving his dream of fighting in the Olympics.

Not only was Ferguson not expected to beat anyone at the National Championships, he was completely unknown. Ferguson had only fought in 10 amateur fights before the event (the minimum to enter) and only began boxing about two years ago when he walked into BoxFit Gym on the north side of Spokane to be trained by the Hillyard Hammer, Chauncy Welliver.

Ferguson earned a berth in the U.S. Olympic Trials when he won the title here in Spokane, but he will face another tough road due to the fact that many of the top names from 2014 didn't attend the NC's. For example former, 2014 Heavyweight champ Joshua Temple didn't show up to defend his title.

But for Ferguson it isn't about proving himself to other fighters. It's deeper than that.

“I wanted to do this for myself,” Ferguson said to The Spokesman-Review's John Blanchette. “I'm not trying to prove it to anybody else. I push the limits because I have to know it — that I can do it for me.

But more impressive than his win or his shot at the Olympics is Ferguson's story on how he got to where he is. KHQ's Patrick Erickson brings you just that in the video player above.
