SWXRightNow.com -- Bloomsday may be the biggest road race event in Spokane, Wash. but it's not the only one where participants can make a difference. SpoKenya Run/Walk is a 7K event that helps Spring of Hope International bring sustainable water resources to Africa.

Kenyan native and Spokanite David Opap has organized the event, now in its sixth year, to help those in his homeland. SpoKenya 2015 is on Saturday, July 18.

Don't miss SWX's full interview with Opap in the video player above. (Available after the conclusion of SWX Tonight).

In SpoKenya's first year the money raised helped bring flouride treatment for a well, the second year renovated a clinic, the third brought rain catchment to a school, in 2013 ponds were deepened and enlarged, last year two broken wells were fixed and this year's proceeds will install rainwater catchers in schools.

Installing rainwater catchment systems in the two local schools will ensure students have clean drinking water and improve their opportunity to attend school because they can bring clean water home with them.

Early registration ranges from $20-$25, depending if you want a shirt, and you can also donate more to the cause. The early registration deadline is July 6. Late registration is from July 7-13 and the price increases to $25-$30.
