KENNEWICK, WA - The WHL announced Wednesday that Tri-City's Taylor Vickerman won the Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy Humanitarian of the Year award at the WHL Awards Ceremony in Calgary.

Vickerman was nominated along with the Eastern Conference Finalist Tyler Wong of the Lethbridge Hurricanes. He is the second Americans player to win the award, with Taylor Procyshen earning the award in 2008-09. Former American Mitch Topping was the runner-up for the award in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

“I am extremely honored to win this award,” Vickerman said. “I was inspired by Taylor (Procyshen) when I attended the MDA Skills and Drills event when I was younger. The community efforts of the Americans is a legacy that players, Procyshen, Adam Hughesman, and others have kept going throughout the years, which is a culture I wanted to carry on. I want to thank the Americans organization, including Justin Hamonic, Beau McCue, Kathleen Adams and especially my family. The Tri-Cities is where I grew up and I enjoy doing what I can to help make this city and community better.”

Taylor, a native of Kennewick, Wash., has been active in the community throughout the season. His big project this season was partnering with teammates McCue and Hamonic to launch the ‘Americans' Faceoff Against Bullying' campaign, visiting local elementary schools to spread acceptance and eliminate bullying within the community.

“It's such a prevalent thing these days in schools around the world and it's affected all of us whether we know it or not,” Vickerman said about the project. “It was awesome to see the way the campaign affected kids in local schools. I had parents and kids coming up to me and telling me I came and spoke at their school and made an impact. It was cool to hear and very rewarding.”

He was also involved in many other projects, some including building houses for Habitat for Humanity, Edith Bishel's “Dinner in the Dark” event, hospital visits and the Salvation Army Kettle Drive.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Taylor and our team,” Americans Governor/GM Bob Tory said. “Taylor has carried on a long standing tradition of community service that has been established by many players.”
