Former Gonzaga Prep Star Signs with Vandals

MOSCOW, Idaho – Chris Sarbaugh, the 2011 MVP of the Washington State 4A Tournament while playing for Gonzaga Prep, will be joining the Idaho Vandals for his final season of collegiate basketball.

Sarbaugh, a 6-3 guard, comes to Idaho after playing the past two seasons – and earning his degree in business, at the University of San Diego. A 2011 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, he first walked on at Gonzaga before playing junior college basketball at North Idaho College then heading to San Diego.

“Chris is a dynamic player who has a great feel for the game of basketball,” Idaho coach Don Verlin said. “He also has a knack for penetrating and making plays for his teammates.”

During his senior season at San Diego, he started eight of the 27 games in which he played. He averaged 3.2 points per game off of a .417 shooting average. He had 28 assists and 14 steals. As a junior for the Toreros, he averaged 2.6 points over the course of 34 games. He shot 44.9 percent from the field and averaged 1.3 assists per game.

He started 30 of 31 games at NIC during the Cardinals' 26-5 2012-13 season. He averaged 7.6 points, 4. 6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He connected on 46.9 percent of his field goals – 37.3 percent from 3-point range. He also had the league's fourth-best steals total with 58.

Sarbaugh was a standout at Gonzaga Prep, where he led the Bullpups to the 2011 state championships. In the title game, he had 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. He 21 points per game during the tournament was reflected in his earning the MVP honor. He was a two-time Greater Spokane League first-team choice. He averaged 12 points, six rebounds and five assists per game as a senior.
