SPOKANE, Wash. -

With the Lilac Bloomsday Run on Sunday, many runners are prepared to do whatever it takes to get a fast time. But 22-year-old Anastasia Black is not. Her goal on Sunday is not to beat the clock but to raise awareness.

Black has been a firefighter with Spokane County Fire District 3 since August 2014. Two months ago, Black decided she would run Bloomsday with her full full firefighter gear.

"It was a pretty spontaneous decision. I was like 'You know what? Let's do this,'" said Black.

Four times a week, Black runs four miles in full gear down Salnave Road in Cheney, Wa. Her only modification: tennis shoes. In total, the gear adds about 40 pounds to her run. Black is only 5'2" and weighs in around 95 pounds.

"I'm going to be very, very sore afterwards, but I've prepared myself enough. I think that I'm ready for the challenge," said Black. "it's more the adrenaline that gets you through, with the crowd and the excitement."

This Bloomsday run will prepare Black for her next task: the 2016 Scott Firefighter Stairclimb in Seattle. She'll climb 69 flights in full gear to support cancer research. In both events, Black will tape pictures of loved ones who are fighting cancer to her helmet.

"I think it's a great way to honor all my friends who have fought so hard through their battles of cancer," said Black.

Black will have her boyfriend and sister running beside her for the race.
