SANTA CLARA, Calif.-Down by three entering the top of the ninth, the Gonzaga baseball squad rallied to pull within one, but they couldn't complete the comeback as the Zags fell just short Sunday, losing 6-5 to Santa Clara in Stephen Schott Stadium.

The Zags ended the game just 90 feet away from a tie score. Jimmy Sinatro led the ninth off with a pinch-hit walk, and Mitchell Gunsolus moved him to second with a single through the right side. Taylor Jones loaded the bases with another single, putting the tying run on base. With two out, freshman Tyler Frost brought the Bulldogs with one with a single through the right side, allowing Sinatro and Gunsolus to score and putting the tying run in Caleb Wood - who ran for Jones - on third base. Jeff Bohling then hit a 0-1 pitch to third baseman Kyle Cortopassi. Cortopassi knocked down the chopper and threw to first, just beating out the onrushing Bohling to end the game at 6-5.

Santa Clara began the game with an early lead, scoring four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff man Grant Meylan singled and then Jose Viscaino Jr. drew a one-out walk. The next four Broncos each tallied an RBI with three base hits and a fielder's choice. GU starter Brandon Bailey got out of the inning by inducing a groundout from Braden Frankfort.

Gonzaga answered back with a run in the top of the second. Bohling led the frame off with a single back to Santa Clara pitcher Evan Brisentine, and Beau Bozett followed him on base with a walk. They both moved up 90 feet with a single from Dustin Breshears, and third baseman Gunsolus brought the lead runner Bohling home by drawing a walk.

The Broncos re-extended their lead to four runs in the next half-inning, getting an unearned run when Cortopassi stole third base and advanced home on a throwing error from GU catcher Joey Harris. Gonzaga got that run back immediately, however, when Jones led the top of the third off with a solo home run, his fourth of the season.

The 5-2 score held for the next two innings until Santa Clara scored one more in the bottom of the fifth. Jake Brodt drew a one-out walk and came home in the next at bat when TC Florentine tripled down the right field line. Bailey responded by striking out Frankfort, but a walk brought Eli Morgan to the mound in relief. He got the final out of the frame and proceeded to hold the Broncos scoreless through the rest of the game.

Gonzaga again brought the score back to within three with another run in the top of the seventh. With two down already, Sam Brown drew a walk on a 3-1 count. Jones then picked up his second RBI of the day with a double to right field, allowing the speedy Brown to score from first base.
