SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Greater Spokane League honored a host of students athletes in its annual Scholar Athlete Luncheon at the Spokane Club on Thursday afternoon. SWX's own Sam Adams announced the player awards.

Below is a GSL release recognizing all of the players.

Each year the GSL recognizes students who excel in the classroom, community and athletics. A male and female student is recognized from each school. This year's winners are:

Central Valley High School

Madison Hovren has a 3.95 GPA and earned 10 varsity letters; two in volleyball, four in basketball and four in track. Madison will attending college at The US Military Academy at West Point while continuing to play basketball.

Briton Demars has a GPA of 3.87 and earned eight varsity letters; four years in cross country and four years in track. Briton was awarded a half tuition scholarship from BYU and will attend Brigham Young University this fall.

Ferris High School

Siniva Areta has a 4.0 GPA, is a Valedictorian, and earned ten varsity letters; 3 in volleyball, 3 in basketball, and 4 in track. Siniva will be attending Gonzaga University where she was awarded the Act Six Leadership scholarship totaling over $200,000.00. She plans on studying engineering and will continue to compete at the collegiate level in Disc, Shot Put, & Hammer.

Liam Cossette has a 3.83 GPA and earned 6 varsity letters; 3 in cross country and 3 in track. Liam will attend either Western Washington University, University of Portland, or Montana State University. He has been awarded merit based scholarships from each of the schools and is now seeking what running programs he would work well with.

Gonzaga Prep High School

Laura Stockton has a 3.2 GPA, and earned 6 varsity letters; 2 in soccer and 3 in basketball. Laura will be attending Gonzaga University on a basketball scholarship.

Nick Wood has a 3.93 GPA and earned 5 varsity letters; 3 in football and 2 in basketball. Nick plans to attend The University of Oregon and is enrolled in the college scholars program, where he received a merit-based scholarship

Lewis & Clark High School

Sierra Kersten has a 4.0 GPA, is a valedictorian and earned four varsity letters; all in golf. Sierra will be attending Stanford University in the fall as a member of their golf team, her major is undecided.

Taylor Duncan has a 3.7 GPA and earned 7 varsity letters during his high school career; 3 in football, 2 in basketball and 2 in track. Taylor will attend either EWU, U of Montana, or Whitworth next year to continue to pursue his academic and athletic goals.

Mead High School

Hanna Bjerkestrand has a 4.0 GPA, is a Valedictorian and earned 9 varsity letters; 4 in gymnastics, 4 in track and one in cheerleading. Hanna will attend Seattle Pacific University or Pacific Lutheran University and has received the dean scholarship from both schools. She wants to study either nursing, occupational therapy, or special education.

AJ Layton has a 4.0 GPA and earned nine varsity letters; four in football, four in track and 1 in wrestling. AJ will attend the University of Washington where he will study pre-med or law.

Mt. Spokane High School

Cheyenne Konrad has a 3.96 PGA and earned five varsity letters, four in track and one in soccer. Cheyenne is waiting on a track scholarship from either Western Washington University or Seattle Pacific to finalize her college decision. She received the Presidential Scholarship from both universities along with a Visual Arts Scholarship and full tuition Falcon Scholarship from SPU. She intends to be an Art or English major and minor in Spanish.

Jacob Yedica has a 3.96 GPA and earned six varsity letters; three in football and three in track. Jacob will attend Montana Tech on a football and academic scholarship studying engineering.

North Central High School

Jessica Huffman has a 4.0 GPA and earned five varsity letters; 3 in fastpitch softball and 2 in slowpitch softball. Jessica will attend either Georgia Institute of Technology or the University of Washington. She is an American Fisheries Society Hutton Scholar winner of $5,000.

Andrew Vandine has a 4.0 GPA, is a Distinguished Valedictorian and earned 8 varsity letters, 4 in cross country and 4 in track. Andrew will attend Montana State University majoring in Chemical Engineering. He received the WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange) Scholarship and a MSU athletic scholarship.

John R. Rogers High School

Kabao Xiong has a 3.95 GPA and earned two varsity letters, both in volleyball. Kabao will attend Eastern Washington University and plan on pursuing a career in the medical field.

Avram Sin has a 3.8 GPA and earned 4 varsity letters; 3 in soccer and 1 in football. Avram will be attending Washington State University where he was awarded several academic scholarships or Multnomah University and play soccer where he was awarded athletic and academic scholarships. He plans on studying computer engineering.

Shadle Park High School

Sofia Pizzillo has a 3.91 GPA and earned 10 total varsity letters: 2 in soccer, 3 in basketball, 4 in track, and 1 in cheer. Sofia will attend Eastern Washington University and will run track on both an athletic and academic full-ride scholarship where she will study pre-medicine.

Sam Stratton has a 3.66 GPA and earned five varsity letters; 3 in basketball and 2 in football. Sam will attend Carroll College where he received a $25,000 football and academic scholarships.

University High School

Emma Kennedy has a 4.0 GPA and earned 7 varsity letters; 3 in basketball and 4 in soccer. Emma will attend Saint Martins University on a basketball and merit scholarships. She plans on majoring in Pre-Physical Therapy.

Tate Orndorff has a 3.98 GPA and earned 8 Varsity letters; 3 in football, 4 in Wrestling, and 1 in golf. Tate received a scholarship to wrestle at Oregon State University, He will attend Oregon State after he serves a 2 year mission for the LDS Church.
