SWXRightNow.com -- The Inland Northwest Sportswriters and Broadcaster awards highlight some of the areas best local talent at the prep level for their junior awards and the announcements of the winners from the 2014 calendar year didn't come as a surprise for anyone who follows high school sports in the area.

Graduated Shadle Park quarterback Brett Rypien and Central Valley's sophomore forward Kelsey Turnbow took home the best individual male and female athlete awards. The North Central cross country team and Gonzaga Prep girl's basketball team earned the top team award and their coaches, Jon Knight and Mike Arte, respectively, earned the top coaching awards given out.

Top Junior Male Athlete - Brett Rypien

Rypien was the obvious choice for the top male athlete for his performance on and off the field. The state-record holding quarterback graduated early from Shadle Park and is already enrolled and practicing at Boise State with the aims of earning time on the playing field right away. MaxPreps has Rypien's stats at 12,599 yards passing and 124 touchdowns in his prep career and he added 400 yards of rushing in his senior season after being mainly seen as a true-pocket passer. Rypien was also named Washington's 3A state player of the year first-team all-GSL honors.

Top Junior Female Athlete - Kelsey Turnbow

Only a sophomore, Turnbow was named the 4A state MVP after leading Central Valley to a second straight state title. Turnbow finished the season with 31 goals, 11 during the Bears title run, and was a two-time Kimmel Athletic Highlight of the Week nominee. Turnbow is also a member of the national team in her age group, also plays for club team Crossfire Premier SC and is already committed to Santa Clara even though she won't graduate until 2017.

Top Junior Male Team

On a pace set by individual state and  Nike regional champion Tanner Anderson, the North Central cross country team won its ninth straight state title. The team also featured three juniors and two sophomores.

Top Junior Female Team

Gonzaga Prep's team has remained hot off of it's 2014 4A state championship with the same core group of now-seniors and juniors. With Laura Stockton, Hannah Caudill, Oona Harrington and GSL MVP Otiona Gildon the Bullpups went undefeated in league play and carried that momentum into the state tournament for the school's first title under Arte.

Top Junior Male Coach

Knight picked up his third Coach of the Year award (2008, '12) and has now tied Mead's record streak with nine straight state titles under his belt.

Top Junior Female Coach

Arte claimed his first SWAB Coach of the Year award by leading the Bullpups on a convincing state title run. Now in his 27th season at the helm, Arte and his G-Prep ladies seem poised for a repeat after going undefeated in GSL play for a second straight season.
