WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Road sweeps are tough enough to come by in any situation, especially late in the season on the road against a divisional rival. However, the Pippins picked up their second road sweep of the season with a 4-1 win over the Walla Walla Sweets Thursday night at Borleske Stadium.

After jumping out to early leads in the series’ first two games, the Pippins (27-18) found themselves behind early in Thursday’s contest, as starter Andrew Woods, who had worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 1st, gave up a run on a sacrifice fly to put the Sweets (21-24) up by a score of 1-0 in the 3rd. The lead marked the first time all series that Walla Walla held a lead against the Pippins.

That lead lasted for a very short time, though, as the Pippins responded with two runs in the 4th on Troy LaBrie’s RBI double and a RBI single by Harrison Ramey that put the Pippins up 2-1.

Woods continued to keep the Sweets quiet, holding the league’s scoring leader to just one run on four hits over six innings of work.

After Woods left in the 7th with the lead still at 2-1, reliever Beau Kerns walked the bases loaded with two outs, but reliever Kenny Rosenberg struck out Mike Paulson to end the threat.

In the top of the 8th, the Pippins put two more runs on the board courtesy of an RBI double for Vince Fernandez and another RBI for LaBrie on a single up the middle.

After Rosenberg worked a scoreless 8th, Nick Kern came out of the bullpen and retired three of the four hitters he faced to pick up his sixth save and extend the Pippins winning streak to four games.

The sweep was Yakima Valley’s fourth of the season and gave the Pippins a victory in the season series over the Sweets by a mark of 5-4. Yakima Valley stays three games up on Wenatchee in the East Division after the Applesox won against Victoria Thursday night. The Pippins come home for the final six home games of the regular season Friday night for a showdown with the Kelowna Falcons at 7:05 p.m.
