Pippins Fall to Rogues 6-1 in Medford

Posted: Updated:
MEDFORD, Ore. – After dominating on Monday night, the Yakima Valley Pippins had the tables turned on them Tuesday night, as the Rogues held the Pippins to just three hits in a 6-1 win at Harry & David Field.

Before the pitching could really take effect, the Rogues (18-15) brought out the bats in the bottom of the 1st, singling in three straight at-bats off Pippins starter Beau Kerns, including a two-run single for Victor Garcia, to take a  2-0 lead.

From there, the attention turned to Medford starter Jackson Bertsch, who retired the first 12 men he faced, and didn’t surrender a hit until Tim Hergert and Alex Guenette led off the 6th inning with back-to-back base hits. Bertsch, however, was able to subdue that threat and keep the Rogues in front.

In the top of the 7th, the Pippins (21-12) had another good scoring chance, as the first two men reached on a hit by pitch and a walk, but reliever Ivan Dilda induced three straight fly outs to keep the Pippins off the board.

With Kerns gone after six impressive innings, the Rogues extended their lead against relievers Austin Hansen and Kelly Fitzpatrick in the bottom of the 7th. Medford got four of the first five men aboard in the inning, and scored four times to take a 6-0 lead.

Down to their final out in the 9th, Vince Fernandez drove in Laz Villa from 2nd base to save the Pippins from their first offensive shutout of the year, but that was all they would get.

After going 4-2 on the road trip, the Pippins return home Wednesday night to take on the Thurston County Senators in a non-league game at 7:05 p.m., before hosting the Wenatchee AppleSox Thursday-Saturday at Yakima County Stadium.
