Zagunis Hits for Cycle as Hawks Top Indians

BOISE, Idaho - Mark Zagunis became the first Boise player to hit for the cycle in two decades, helping the Hawks to a crucial come-from-behind 11-6 victory over the Spokane Indians at Memorial Stadium. The Cubs third-round pick out of Virginia Tech was 4-for-5 and drove in a career-high four runs, helping the Hawks remain two games back of Hillsboro in the Northwest League South Division first-half pennant race with seven games remaining.

It was the first time a Boise player had recorded a single, double, triple, and home run in a game since Demond Smith achieved the feat vs. Everett on Aug. 4, 1994.

After Spokane jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a half inning - thanks to a two-run homer by Luke Tendler and a solo homer from Zach Cone - Zagunis opened the scoring for the Hawks in the bottom of the frame, gapping a two-run double to left.

The catcher would add a leadoff single to right in the third, scoring on a Justin Marra RBI double, as Boise pulled even at 5-5.

Trailing 6-5 in the fourth, Zagunis drove a two-run homer out to right - his first professional home run - to give the Hawks the lead. Marra added an RBI double and Jason Vosler roped a two-run homer of his own to break the game open.

After striking out in the fifth, Zagunis had a final chance in the eight, lifting a 2-0 pitch into shallow right field. Spokane's second-baseman, Seth Spivey never located the ball in the late-day sky, with the ball landing in front of right fielder Diego Cedeno - with Zagunis diving headfirst into second for the double.

"I didn't picture getting a double like that," said Zagunis. "But I'll definitely take it."

Tyler Ihrig gutted out five innings to pick up his fourth-consecutive victory, with the Boise bullpen limiting Spokane to just two hits in the final four innings.

Game 2 of the series is tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. with Erick Leal meeting Richelson Pena.

NOTES: The last cycle completed in the Northwest lead was by Salem-Keizer's Adam Witter on Aug. 29, 2007 vs. Vancouver…also tonight, former Boise Hawk Albert Almora hit for the cycle in a Daytona Cubs win…it was the largest come-from-behind victory by the Hawks this season and pushed the club to three-games above the .500 mark for the first time since Game 5 of the season…Vosler was 3-for-4 in the win…Jeffrey Baez was 2-for-5, extending his hit streak to 17 games, with Rashad Crawford recording a first inning double to push his hit streak to 14…it was the most runs allowed this season by Spokane…
