SPOKANE, Wash. -- Los Angeles Dodgers legend and former Spokane Indian Steve Garvey made a return to Avista Stadium to throw out the ceremonial first pitch and watch his son, Ryan Garvey, play right field for the visiting Tri-City Dust Devils as they defeated the Indians 3-1 behind the performance of Tri-City starter Helmis Rodriguez at Avista Stadium on Wednesday, June 9.

Rodriguez only faced trouble in the second inning when Indians (18-8) catcher Marcus Greene lifted a home run off of The Depot to give the Indians a 1-0 lead over the Dust Devils (11-15). Spokane center fielder Zach Cone looked to keep the inning going with a line drive smash to deep right, only to be robbed by Ryan Garvey with Spokesman-Review writer Chris Derek called a sparkling catch.

Then the Indians bats quieted with Rodriguez settling into a grove. The final line for Rodriguez was 8 innings pitched, 5 hits and 1 strikeout with 1 earned run.

It wasn't until the top of the sixth that Tri-City was able to tie the game up on what looked like it was going to be an inning-ending fly ball to center by Dillon Thomas. But Cone dropped it and Francisco Sosa came in to score easily from second.

The Dust Devils would score in the eighth on a RBI double from Miguel Dilone to plate Marcos Derkes, with Derkes hitting a solo shot over The Depot in the top of the ninth to give Tri-City the 3-1 lead heading into the final frame.

The Indians threatened with singles from Seth Spivey and Luke Tendler and with Greene hit by Dust Devils closer Scott Firth's pitch Spokane had bases loaded for Cone. He flared a ball into center on the first pitch he saw to end the game. Firth earned his seventh save.

Tri-City and the Indians will return to Avista Stadium tomorrow, Thursday June 10, at 6:30 p.m. PDT in the series finale.
