Is the National Hockey League coming to Seattle? It is if Wayne Gretzky has anything to say about it.

As reported by the New York Post, Gretzky as part of a trio of investors is looking to bring a team to the Pacific Northwest. It is not known whether the group plans to attempt re-locating a team or winning one through expansion.

In May, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman stated that the league has no immediate plans for an expansion team and "not in an expansion process."

This would be the second attempt by "The Great One" to own an NHL team. In 2011 Gretzky joined the New York-based Providence Equity Partners in what ended up as a $1.5 billion failed attempt to purchase the Toronto Maple Leafs.

One of the other interested party's in bringing hockey to Seattle is Chris Hansen. The hedge-fund guru has said he is willing to finance a new arena, but only if there is an NBA team involved.

Bettman has openly stated that Seattle would need a new arena for the NHL to be willing put a franchise in the Emerald City. Also, a source told the Post that, "He (Hansen) needs a team to get the arena off the ground," a source close to the situation said.
