Indians Split Doubleheader in Eugene

The Emeralds and Indians split a doubleheader Monday afternoon. Eugene was the road team in their own ballpark for game one as the two teams made up a rain out from a game originally scheduled to be played June 17 in Spokane. The Ems offense was ready to go right out of bed as they put together a two-out rally in the top of the 1st. Jalen Goree and Marcus Davis both had base hits to setup a Trae Santos RBI single. Chase Jensen followed with a 2-run double and the Ems led it 3-0.

In the 2nd inning the Ems did not let up on lefty starter Derek Thompson as Rod Boykin led off with a single. Two batters later, Cory Spangenberg tripled to right center field making it 4-0. Goree picked up his 6th RBI of the year with a sacrifice fly and the Ems were in control 5-0.

Ems starter Michael Kelly had a solid 6-inning performance allowing just four hits and one walk. The only run for Spokane came off a solo shot from CF Zach Cone in the 2nd inning. Kelly picked up his second win of the year after Seth Lucio cleaned up the 7th and final inning by retiring all three men he faced.

After a half hour break, they came back out for game 2 of the doubleheader. With Spokane as the visiting team, the top of the 1st inning proved important once again. Lefty Griffin Russell gave up a one out single to Juremi Profar before Jose Trevino belted the first pitch he saw over the fence in left. The Indians added a solo blast in the top of the 2nd when Fernando Vivili hit an opposite field homer making it 3-0.

Eugene's offense was stagnated by right-hander Austin Pettibone out of UC Santa Barbara. He tossed 5 innings of 3-hit baseball with no walks and 4 punch outs. Spokane tacked on two more runs in the 3rd with a two-out rally that chased Russell from the game. Aaron Cressley settled things down for 1.1 innings before handing the ball to Sam Holland. The Australian reliever found some tough luck in the 5th when three straight grounders found holes to start the inning with Spokane's 6th run. A sacrifice fly made it 7-0 putting the game out of reach for Eugene.

RHP Walker Lockett started the 6th inning by allowing a single and then back-to-back walks to load the bases. Lockett was lifted for Cory Bostjancic who retired the next two men before allowing a triple to SS Isiah Kiner-Falefa and the 10-0 route was complete.

Eugene managed just 4 hits in game two when they had a chance to get their record to .500 with a win. There are still three games left in this series after the Ems have taken two of the first three. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night's games will all start at 7:05pm, tickets are available at EmeraldsBaseball.com.
