Dust Devils' Gonzales Sees Son Reach "The Show"

Posted: Updated:
PASCO, WA - Frank Gonzales is a coach, it's what he does. He trains the Dust Devils pitchers and prepares them for the future. But the player he’s trained the longest is his son Marco, who just one year after being drafted out of Gonzaga University, made his Major League debut last week for the St. Louis Cardinals.
"Somebody asked me 'did I cry?," says Gonzales. "I said no, I was actually laughing the whole time, couldn't stop laughing I was so elated with joy that he was getting a shot to pitch in the big leagues. I haven't cried to this day, but I'm really just so caught up in everything I'm doing in baseball, knowing he's in the process. We'll have some crying moments this winter, hopefully he'll get into the playoffs, then we'll really be crying!"

Of course, having a Dad who's a pitching expert didn't hurt.

"I was fortunate enough to coach him through Little League and go through the process with him on the field as much as I could. At the same time, I let him do his own thing," says Gonzales.

All that father/son time paid off last Wednesday in his first appearance, in his home state of Colorado. He went 5 innings and finished with a no-decision and hit a double. But what touched Frank was seeing all the support from Marco’s family and friends.

"We could have filled up the section of this stadium [Gesa Stadium, Pasco] with the amount of fans we had there to support Marco [Wednesday]," says Gonzales.

So even though they aren't the Griffeys or the Bonds' or the Boones, this father/son combo enjoys that they're just like the rest of us.

"Nothing over the top: one of the front office folks said 'how's Marco doing'; I really haven't talked to him in a couple of days! Might get a text every couple days, may talk once a week, shot him an interesting article about pitching the other day, but nothing really over the top. We're really just buds, man, we're the best of buds, and at the end of the day that's what makes it really special."
