Cardinals to Call Up Former Zag Marco Gonzales

Posted:
Former Gonzaga Bulldogs ace Marco Gonzales will be called up to the St. Louis Cardinals and make his Major League debut on Wednesday, the team announced Monday.

Gonzales was St. Louis’ first round pick in the 2013 draft, going 19th overall. The southpaw has skyrocketed through the Cardinals’ minor league system, having opened the season at High-A Palm Beach before being promoted to Double-A Springfield. During his brief stint in Springfield, Gonzales went 3-2 with a 2.33 ERA in 38.2 innings. He also struck out 48 batters, compared to just 10 walks.

His debut on Wednesday will be a homecoming of sorts for Gonzales. The Fort Collins, Colo., native will be pitching at hitter-friendly Coors Field as the Cardinals visit the Rockies.
