TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed center Tyler Johnson to a three-year contract as announced by the team on Friday, May 23. According to Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune the three-year deal is worth $10-million, $3.33-million per year.

Johnson and teammate Ondrej Palat are finalists for the NHL's top rookie award. They're joined by Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche in the running for the Calder Trophy, the NHL's Rookie of the Year Award.

Johnson had a rookie team-record 24 goals and tied with MacKinnon for the NHL lead among rookies. Johnson also had 26 assists and finished plus-23 for the season.

“He had a very good first year and we are counting on him to be better,’’ Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said to the Tampa Tribune. “He got better as the year went on, there is still room to improve. ...He’s got the skating ability and the skills and hockey sense and he’s committed to being a good overall player.’’

Johnson recently participated in the World Championships with USA Hockey after the Lightning were eliminated from the NHL Playoffs by Montreal. The U.S. No. 1 choice at center in the tournament finished with a team high six goals and was third on the team with nine points. The Czech Republic knocked the U.S. out of the tournament with a 4-3 win on Thursday.
