Former Zag Gonzales Shines in AA Debut for Cardinals

Marco Gonzales is quickly moving up the ladder in the St. Louis Cardinals' farm system.  The former Gonzaga Bulldog made his first start Saturday for the AA Springfield Cardinals, striking out five batters while allowing just one earned in five innings of work.  Gonzales started the season with the Palm Beach Cardinals, the parent club's High-A affiliate in Florida, where he made six starts, posting a 2-2 record with a 1.43 ERA while striking out 32 batters in 37.2 innings pitched.

Gonzales was the number 19 overall draft pack by the Cardinals in 2013 after a stellar collegiate career at Gonzaga.  As a freshman, he went 11-2 with a 2.57 ERA and earned WCC co-Player of the Year and co-Freshman of the Year honors.  The following season, he was named the WCC Pitcher of the Year and was an All-American.  He capped off his career with the Bulldogs as a junior with a team-high .311 batting average and a 7-3 mark with a 2.80 ERA on the mound, winning the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award.
