STANFORD, Calif. – Cal Quantrill limited Washington State to one run over eight innings and Stanford knocked off the visiting Cougars 5-2 in the opener of a three-game Pac-12 series at Sunken Diamond, Friday night.

Quantrill (4-5) gave up four hits, fanned 10 and walked three for Stanford (25-22, 12-13 Pac-12). The Cardinal tallied a run in the first and another in the third against Washington State (22-26, 12-13) starter Joe Pistorese (4-3) to take a 2-0 lead.

Trace Tam Sing, who had two of the four hits off Quantrill, homered in the fifth, his first of the season, to bring the Cougars within 2-1. Stanford responded in the sixth when Zach Hoffpauir took Pistorese deep with a man on to extend the Cardinal’s advantage to 4-1.

After the Cougar bullpen gave up a run in the eighth, Tam Sing homered in the ninth to account for the final score. It marked the first multi-home run game of his career. Prior to Friday, the last Cougar to homer twice in a game was Taylor Ard at Oregon, April 22, 2012.
