BLOOMSDAY: Wheelchair Race Results in Wins for Familiar Faces

Posted:
The wheelchair race kicked off Bloomsday 2014 on Sunday, May 4, and the finishes in both the men and women's divisions didn't disappoint. Josh George earned his first Bloomsday victory in the men's open, while Susannah Scaroni secured her second-straight win on the women's side.

"It's actually the first time I've won this race, so it's really exciting," George said after his victory.

Scaroni, a native of Tekoa, Wash., won took her Bloomsday victory with a time beating her winning time of 32:55 last year by almost two minutes. Scaroni caps off a long stretch of strong performances with this win in Spokane, Wash., in recent weeks she has placed third at the Boston Marathon, fourth at the London Marathon and won the L.A. Marathon.

"It's just good to be home," Scaroni said after her win.

In the men's heat, George completed the course way ahead of the pack. George just won the L.A. Marathon with a time of 1:33:11, he also took first in the NYC Half Marathon and placed sixth in the OZ 10km.

"I think I've finished second a couple of times, third a couple of times, but I took off strong at the start today and was able to hold everybody off," George.

The hills of Bloomsday played a factor in the race for both champions, George for one commented on Doomsday Hill.

"That's part of the greatness of this race," George said. "It has some really strong sections, like Doomsday."

Scaroni enjoys the hills and say's she excels in courses that are particularly uneven.

"Lot's of nice hills for me to climb." Scaroni said. "They're my favorite things."

Both of these champions apparently handled the battle of the hills well and used them to win.
