SPOKANE, Wash. -- Bloomsday 2014 looks to be a stellar race, from start to finish. The elite runners and wheelchair athletes were announced at Bloomsday headquarters on Tuesday, featuring deep fields, familiar faces and record-breaking competitors.

Mosinet Geremew, a 22 year-old from Ethiopia, will wear the No. 1 bib in the men’s elite race. He won the 2013 Peachtree 10k with a time of 28:07, and has already won the Hy-Vee Festival of Races Half Marathon and Praha Half Marathon in 2014.

Geremew will be pushed by a pack of Kenyans who should help push the tempo. 2012 Bloomsday champion Allan Kiprono, 24, finished third in last year’s Bloomsday at 34:51, just 22 seconds off of his winning pace the year before. Lani Kiplagat Rutto has twice placed fifth at Bloomsday, consistently keeping a sub 35-minute pace. Simon Ndirangu, 28, posted the fifth-best time in Bloomsday history in 2011, when he won with a blistering 33:58. Julius Keter, 25, will be running in his first Bloomsday this year, but won the 2013 Utika Boilermaker 15k (43:55) and recently finished fifth in the L.A. Marathon.

The 2014 Lilac Bloomsday Run women's division features one of its deepest fields to date. Janet Cherbon-Bawcom finished second in Bloomsday 2012, and the 35 year-old from Flagstaff, Arizona will have the No. 1 this year and is considered the favorite in a stacked field (Cherbon-Bawcom has since scratched from the race with a foot injury sustained in a recent workout). Kenya’s Mary Wacera, 25, has the tenth-fasted 10k time in the world for 2014, winning the World’s Best 10k with a time of 32:06. Another 25 year-old Kenyan, Risper Gesabwa, has three top-5 finishes this year at the Crescent City Classic, Hy-Vee Half Marathon, and Shamrockin Run 8k.

The women’s elite field also boasts a Bloomsday legend in Lineth Chepkurui. The 26 year-old from Kenya won three straight Bloomsday’s in 2008, 2009, and 2010, capped off by a course record 38:10, which at the time was the fastest 10k ever run run in the world.
