Hundreds of fans made it out to enjoy the first-ever “Mud Bog” experience at SCR last Saturday, April 19. Spectator turn-out exceeded the 2013 opener, another step forward for the facility.

Social media buzzed with feedback throughout the weekend. SCR management was encouraged by the energy and passion for this new event and spoke extensively with leaders of the newly formed Northwest Mudders Racers Association (NMRA), who in partnership with SCR management organized Saturday’s event, to discuss this first of its kind event at the Raceway.

Mudders ran several heats in each class as they ran through the brackets Saturday. Derek Butter took the "4 & 6" class, Paul Lund was the "Stock" winner and Norm Hale took home the Modified's trophy. Chris Schuh won the Super Stocks, with Jim Smith coming out on top in the "X-Class". Megatrucks were led by Kevin Zufall. Pictures were taken of the winners and plaques will be awarded at the next event.

One key to exciting mud bog action is the mud! Organizers hauled in dirt and spent hours prepping before the event after initial concerns that the mud may not be “deep” enough to challenge the Mudders. When racing began, the mud was over 36” deep and few vehicles met the challenge of crossing the 200’ long strip. With nearly every vehicle needing to be helped by heavy equipment, races were still going just after dark. The next event will feature the right mud consistency and depth. The NMRA intends to award purses to class winners at the upcoming events as well.

“We had a couple minor hiccups, but for a first ever event it was great. Usually we’re racing on someone’s property – hauling in dirt’s never been done. This is a big time venue and we’re excited to be here!" said NMRA Board Member Kevin Zufall. Zufall drives a “Megatruck” class mudder.

“We have new equipment planned to dress the pits (or bogs) and to recover vehicles which should be more efficient and a faster show,” he said. “We want 18” inches of good mud where were judging by time for the most part. We're gonna find that happy medium.”

SCR and NMRA aim to ratchet up the action for fans by creating a “Mud Drag” experience – drawing on the experience of the Lucas Oil Drag Strip team at SCR. “We’ll get more efficient as we get these dialed in,” said Oval Track Manager Mike Hoover. “We are going to create a one of a kind fan experience.”

The biggest and most exciting change planned is the addition of Drift Racing to the Mud Bog event days. This means that drifters will be running while the mudders run their heats in the center. It will create a great show for spectators. “It’ll be non-stop action! No one’s put on Mud Bogs and Drift Racing on the same track – at the same time. You’re getting two great shows for one price, some dates three with the Drag Strip,” he said.

Drift Racing began in Japan and gained popularity in the U.S. from "Fast and Furious" movie series. The key to "drifting" is controlling your call while losing traction so that the car slides sideways through turns. Drifters are judged on various techniques announced at the beginning of the heats.

In order to ensure great events each time, SCR and the NMRA have decided to limit the Series to four additional events in 2014 – one each month, May through August. Truck maintenance, conditions and other scheduled events were all factors in the revised schedule. Drivers were concerned their trucks wouldn’t make it through the original 10 event schedule.

The original Mud Bog schedule called for an event this Saturday that will not be held. The remaining Mud Drag Races will still be held on Saturdays: May 24th, June 21st, July 12th, and August 23rd. More details can be found at www.racing.sc or by following the Spokane County Raceway on Facebook.
