SPOKANE, Wash. – Starting pitcher Cory Mack dominated Pacific into the eighth inning to lead Whitworth to a 6-1 win in the opener of a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday at Merkel Field, but Donnie Bradley hit two home runs to spark the visitors to a 6-2 win in the night cap.

After the split the Pirates are 9-19 overall and 6-11 in the NWC. The Boxers are 11-17, 4-13. The teams will decide the series with Sunday’s finale at noon.

Game 1 – Whitworth 6, Pacific 1

Cory Mack allowed only one unearned run on four hits into the eighth inning to improve to 4-3 this season. He struck out five Pacific batters and walked only two.

Bradley got to third base with only one out in the top of the first inning. But he was stranded after Mack struck out Walker Olis and got Nick Garrett on a ground out.

Whitworth did most of its damage in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on four hits and one Pacific error. Tyler Pfeffer, making his first start since Feb. 21 at the College of Idaho, drove in the first two runs of the game with a bases-loaded single through the right side. Two batters later, Jeremy Druffel hit a soft liner toward shortstop that Bradley took his eyes off of for only a second while lining up a potential double play. That error allowed Joshua Davis to score from third. Matt Nelson followed with an RBI single and Justin Liu sent in the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Pacific finally got on the board in the seventh with an unearned run. Jimmy Brakebush scored from third base when Dan Jaffe reached on a throwing error with two outs.

But the Pirates got that run back in the bottom of the seventh when Davis drilled a solo home run to right field.

Taylor Isadore threw the final 1.2 innings for the Bucs, allowing no hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Kyle Treadway (2-6) started on the mound for Pacific and took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits. Levi Peterson and Austin Gallagher were solid in relief.

Game 2 – Pacific 6, Whitworth 2

Bradley went 4-5 with two home runs to lead the Boxers to the win in the nightcap. They were his first two home runs of the season and both were solo shots.

His first came with one out in the bottom of the first inning, giving Pacific a quick 1-0 lead. After Nathan Suyematsu singled, Olis followed with a two-run homer to extend the lead to 3-0 before even two batters were out.

The Pirates quickly got two of those runs back when Davis nailed his second home run of the day in the bottom half of the inning with Gerhard Muelheims aboard. He now has three homers this year.

The Boxers added a run in the second as Kyle Treadway scored when Ben Duerr reached on a fielder’s choice.

From there both starting pitchers settled down and were strong into the seventh inning. Pacific starter Colin McCusker would not allow another run and benefitted from a pair of key double plays later in the game.

Whitworth starter Carson Blumenthal kept the Bucs within two runs until leaving with one out in the sixth inning.

Pacific added its final two runs in the seventh off of reliever Dan Scheibe. Bradley led off the seventh with an opposite-field homer to right. With two outs Justin Strayer reached second base after his pop up to left field was dropped. Mike Thomson followed with a single up the middle that moved Strayer to third. Scheibe appeared to catch Thomson leading off of first base and the runner broke for second. The throw from first base to second allowed Strayer to scamper home from third with the final run.

Muelheims led off the sixth inning with a double, but a double play ended the threat after the Pirates had runners at the corners. Whitworth’s last threat came in the eighth, loading the bases with one out. Another double play squashed that scoring chance

McCusker (2-1) went 7.1 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits to earn the win. Tyler Kotchick threw to only one batter in the eighth, but recorded two outs by inducing the double play. Topher Mood worked a perfect ninth.

Blumenthal (0-6) allowed four runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings for Whitworth. Scheibe finished and gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits with six strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

Muelheims finished the game 3-4 for the Pirates.
