Whitworth Baseball Snaps 10-Game Losing Streak

PORTLAND, Ore. – Cory Mack threw a complete game to lead visiting Whitworth to a 9-2 win at Lewis & Clark in the second game of a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader, ending the Pirates’ ten-game losing streak.

Whitworth is now 7-18 overall and 4-11 in the NWC and the Bucs can claim the three-game series with a win in Monday’s finale.  The Pioneers are 9-16-1, 3-11.

Game 1 – Lewis & Clark 11, Whitworth 5
The Pioneers broke open a close game with three runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Jeremy Druffel’s RBI single.  The Bucs added a run in the fourth when Gerhard Muelheims drew a bases-loaded walk.

L&C took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Corey Davis drove in the first run with an RBI single up the middle then came around to score on Ben Beck’s bunt single.

The Pioneers scored three more in the fifth, driving Pirate starting pitcher Carson Blumenthal from the game.  Jacob Burton’s two-run single to left field did most of that damage.

L&C would eventually stretch the lead to 11-2 after scoring four runs in the seventh.  Davis led off the winning with a single and was one of two Pioneers to score on a hit by Bradley Liza.  Liza later scored on a hit by Hayden Higger.

The Pirates got three runs back in the ninth.  Joshua Davis and Thomas Wakem had RBIs in the frame.

Nick Motsinger had two hits and scored twice for Whitworth.  Davis, Druffel and Wakem all had two hits as well.  Higger and Burton each went 4-5 with three RBIs to lead L&C at the plate.

Blumenthal (0-5) allowed six runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings.  Michael Renner gave up five runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings of relief.  Tyler VonDracek didn’t give up a run in the final 1.1 innings.

Alex Heimbro allowed two runs on five hits in six innings of work as the Pioneer starter.  Ryan Strombom tossed the final three innings.

Game 2 – Whitworth 9, Lewis & Clark 2
Cory Mack (3-3) threw the Pirates’ first complete-game victory of the season, allowing two runs on seven hits.  He struck out seven batters and walked none.

Motsinger gave Whitworth a 1-0 lead in the second inning.  Matt Nelson led off the fourth with his first home run of the year and then Motsinger made it 3-0 later in the frame with a sacrifice fly.

The Pirates broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning.  Motsinger, Muelheims and Wakem all had RBI singles for the Bucs.

Mack’s only mistake of the game came in the bottom of the seventh when he allowed a two-run homer by Tommy Massari.

Wakem added an RBI double in the eighth for the Bucs.  He finished the game 4-5 at the plate.  Motsinger led the Pirates with three RBIs.

John Trupin (3-4) took the loss on the mound after allowing eight runs (six earned) on 15 hits in seven innings of work.
