Cougars Crush San Jose St. 16-3

By Washington State University Athletics

PULLMAN, Wash. –
Washington State pounded out a season-high 20 hits and defeated San Jose State 16-3 for its third-straight game over visiting San Jose State.

The 16 runs are also a season high for the Cougars (12-13). Ian Sagdal led the way with four hits and four RBI to tie his career high in both categories.

The Spartans (8-21) scored three times in the second inning and chased Cougar started Sean Hartnett after just five outs.

“We did not get the start we expected from Sean (Hartnett), but a lot of guys picked him up,” Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. “We kept up the pressure offensively and took advantage of getting a lot of good pitches to hit.”

Sam Triece (1-1) relieve Hartnett and pitched 4 1/3 shutout innings, the longest outing of his career, while striking out three to earn his first-career win. Matt Bower, Jacob Schroeder and Layne Bruner each pitched an inning for the Cougars to close out the victory.

Washington State got on the board in the third when Luke Stratman singled with one out, moved to third on a single by Collin Slaybaugh and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Trek Stemp. In the fourth, Nick Tanielu doubled with one and scored on a single by Ben Roberts.

The Cougars grabbed a 6-3 lead with a four-run fifth. Stratman led off with a single and went to third on a single by Slaybaugh, who took second on the throw. Stemp tied the game with sacrifice fly of Spartan starter Kalei Contrades (2-2). Yale Rosen greeted reliever Johnny Melero with a single that scored Slaybaugh. After Rosen was cut down trying to steal, Tanielu doubled and Roberts was hit by a pitch. Matt Mendenhall and Sagdal contributed back-to-back, RBI-singles to cap the rally.

Washington State added four runs in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Tanielu and a three-run home run by Roberts to increase its lead to 10-3.

The Cougars sent 10 men to the plate during a six-run eighth inning. After three-consecutive walks with one out, Michael Monda delivered a pinch hit, RBI-single. A walk to Mendenhall forced in a run and Sagdal drilled a three-run triple to make the score 15-3. Sagdal strolled home on triple by Wes Leow.

Washington State returns to Pac-12 Conference action when California visits Pullman for a three-game series beginning, Friday at 6 p.m.
