George Fox Shuts Out Whitworth, Sweeps Series

By Whitworth Athletics

SPOKANE, Wash. – Starting pitcher Tom Zarosinski scattered six hits over eight scoreless innings to lead visiting George Fox to a 5-0 win over Whitworth in the finale of a Northwest Conference baseball series on Sunday at Merkel Field.

The Bruins completed the series sweep and improved to 20-6 overall and 10-5 in the NWC.  The Pirates dropped to 6-17, 3-9.

Zarosinski was strong through eight innings and improved to 5-2 this season.  He struck out seven Whitworth batters and only allowed one runner to reach third base.  That came in the third inning when Paul Miller singled and Nick Motsinger and Joshua Davis drew walks to load the bases with two outs.  But Zarosinski got a strikeout of Jeremy Druffel to end the threat.

The Bruins got two runs against Whitworth starter Spencer Ansett in the third inning.  Clay Mott scored the initial run when a potential double play relay throw got away at first base.  Josh Rapacz followed with an RBI single.

Kadyn Nannini’s two-run double in the fourth inning made the score 4-0.  Danny Clifford led off the fifth with a double, which caused the Pirates to bring in Taylore Isadore in relief.  Clifford eventually scored on a single by Zach Rapacz for the final GFU run.

Isadore kept the Bruins off of the scoreboard over the final five innings of the game, allowing four hits.

Whitworth’s last scoring threat came in the bottom of the eighth when Motsinger reached on an error by the second baseman and Garrett Hughes followed with a single with no outs.  But Zarosinski got two pop ups and a strikeout to end that threat.  The Pirates stranded nine runners in the game.

Ansett dropped to 1-2 after allowing five runs on six hits in four innings.

Nannini finished 2-4 with two RBIs for George Fox, while Josh Rapacz and Clifford also had a pair of hits.  Clifford finished the weekend 8-13 at the plate.

Hughes and Gerhard Muelheims each had two hits for the Bucs.

Whitworth travels to Portland next weekend for a three-game set at Lewis & Clark College.  The Pirates are looking to end a nine-game losing streak.
