8th Inning Rally Leads M's to 9-8 Win

PEORIA, Ariz. – The Mariners scored six runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to rally from behind to defeat the Texas Rangers 9-8 on Sunday afternoon at Peoria Stadium. The win was the Mariners third consecutive victory and improved the team to 10-3 in Cactus League play.

The Mariners erupted for six runs on six hits in the 8th inning to take the lead after trailing 8-3 heading into bottom of the inning. Catcher Mike Dowd hit a two-run ground-rule double to start the scoring in the inning, followed by a two-run triple by outfielder Cole Gillespie. Shortstop Chris Taylor hit a run-scoring double and center fielder Xavier Avery recorded a RBI single in the inning to cap off the comeback victory.

Mariners second baseman Willie Bloomquist (3x3) and shortstop Brad Miller (2x3, R) combined to record 5 of the Mariners 15 hits. After going 0-for-4 in his first two games, Bloomquist is batting .500 (6x12) with a run scored, a double and 2 RBI during his current four-game hit streak.

The Mariners got on the board in the 3rd inning on a two-out RBI single by Kyle Seager scoring Brad Miller. Seattle added two more runs in the 4th inning a RBI double by Logan Morrison and a sacrifice fly by Michael Saunders.

In the last four games, the Mariners offense is batting .351 (53x151) with 45 runs 9 doubles, 2 triples, 9 home runs and 44 RBI. Overall this spring Seattle is batting .303 (225x468) with 101 runs scored, 50 extra-base hits and 93 RBI.

Right-handed reliever Tom Wilhelmsen (1-0) earned his first win of the spring, after tossing a scoreless 7th and 8th inning, while Logan Bawcom picked up the save with a scoreless 9th inning.

Starting pitcher Felix Hernandez allowed 4 runs, all in the 3rd inning, on 4 hits with a walk and 4 strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work, but didn't figure into the decision.

The Mariners (10-3) continue Cactus League play tomorrow with a pair of games in split-squad action. In the afternoon Mariners host the Royals at Peoria Stadium (RH Brandon Maurer vs. RH James Shields) and in the evening travel to play the Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in Scottsdale (LH James Paxton vs. LH Patrick Corbin). The game vs. the Diamondbacks will be broadcast live on 710 ESPN Seattle.
