Mariners Win Third Straight Spring Training Contest

PEORIA, Ariz. – The Seattle Mariners improved to 3-0 in Cactus League play with a 5-3 rain-shortened win in 7 innings over the Los Angeles Angels Saturday afternoon at Peoria Stadium.

The Mariners 3-4-5 hitters, Robinson Cano, Justin Smoak and Logan Morrison, combined to go 6-for-8. Cano finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, Smoak was 2-for-2 with a double and a walk and Morrison was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.

Seattle is off to a 3-0 start in spring training play for the sixth time in club history, but first since 1994.

Seattle jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Smoak led off with a towering double off the center field wall, and came into score on a fielder’s choice by Brad Miller. Carlos Triunfel plated Dustin Ackley with the second run on a sac fly to center field.

The Mariners added to the lead with two more runs in the 3rd inning, with Cano and Ackley plating runs in the inning. Morrison completed the Mariners scoring with a RBI double in the bottom of the 5th inning.

Mariners starter Scott Baker (1-0) earned the win allowing one hit and one walk in 2.0 scoreless innings. Left-hander Roenis Elias (1.1 IP) and Hector Noesi (1.2 IP) added scoreless relief efforts.

The Mariners (3-0) continue Cactus League play tomorrow with a road game against the Cleveland Indians (Sunday, March 2) at Goodyear Ballpark at 12:05 PT/1:05 MT at Peoria Stadium. The game will be broadcast live in the Seattle area on 710 ESPN Seattle and the Mariners Radio Network. Left-handed pitcher Randy Wolf is scheduled to start for the Mariners against Indians right-hander Aaron Harang.
