SURPRISE, Ariz. – Gonzaga University baseball allowed nine-runs in the final three innings as Arizona State University dropped the Bulldogs 10-5 at Surprise Stadium Friday.
Brandon Bailey got the start for the Bulldogs (2-8 overall) and was dealt his second defeat of the year. The freshman worked 6.0 innings allowing four runs on seven hits.
Gonzaga scored three-runs in the top of the eighth inning to cut into the Sun Devil lead 6-5. Junior Beau Bozett scored a pair on a base hit up the middle and sophomore Nicholas Minteer had an RBI single to left field.
However, Arizona State put the game away with one swing of the bat in the bottom half of the frame.
With one out, ASU’s Trevor Allen hit a grand slam off reliever Kenny Smith to all but end the game. Smith was tagged for three-runs on three hits in 0.2 innings of work.
The Bulldogs were out-hit 13-8 but did hold an early 2-0 lead over the tournament host.
In the second inning, Cabe Reiten connected on one of his three hits of the day to score Taylor Jones. The other run came on some fundamental baseball in the fifth. Leadoff batter Caleb Wood walked and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Bozett. Wood stole third base and came home on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt by Mitchell Gunsolus.
ASU took over the lead in the sixth inning. Dalton DiNatale hit a two RBI double off Bailey, putting GU down 3-2. David Bigelow relieved Bailey in the seventh. Bigelow ran into some trouble himself and was responsible for three runs on three hits.
Junior Cory LeBrun went hitless in the game and ended his streak of reaching base safely at 16. Payden Cawley Lamb did extend his hit streak to seven games after finishing 1-for-3 in the game.
GU resumes play Saturday in Arizona with an afternoon tilt against Manhattan College. The Bulldogs and Jaspers are set to face at 4 p.m.
