PARKLAND, Wash. – The Whitworth University softball team scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn a 7-2 win over Pacific Lutheran University and remain undefeated in Northwest Conference action on Friday.

Junior Peyton McMahon hit her third home run of the season and finished the game 2-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored for Whitworth. The Pirates improve to 12-3 overall, 5-0 in the NWC. The Lutes fall to 1-6 on the season, 0-3 in NWC play.

Two Pirate errors allowed Pacific Lutheran to put a run on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Leah Butters walked senior Julia Johnson to lead off the second inning. McMahon homered to center field, scoring sophomore pinch runner Brittany Connor and putting the Pirates up 2-1. Two more Whitworth errors allowed the Lutes to score in the bottom of the third and tie the score, 2-2.

The teams combined for five hits in the next five innings and left five players on base. Whitworth got the go-ahead run when freshman Kelsey Stroshine was walked with bases loaded. Sophomore Megan John’s single to left center put two more runs on the board for the Pirates. Sophomore Alyssa Hall’s bunt allowed Stroshine to score. Whitworth was able to push one more run across the plate before PLU got the third out. Tori Hamura singled for the Lutes in the bottom of the ninth, but was stranded on second base as PLU’s final two batters popped up.
