CALDWELL, Idaho – Cory Mack’s strong pitching performance lifted visiting Whitworth to a 6-3 win in the opener, but College of Idaho rallied to take the nightcap 7-3 in a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Wolfe Field.
The Pirates are now 3-4 while the Coyotes move to 6-5. The teams will complete the four-game series on Sunday with a single contest at 11:00 am (MST).
Game 1 – Whitworth 6, College of Idaho 3
Cory Mack allowed two runs on three hits over six innings to pick up his first career Pirate victory. He struck out five batters and walked four.
The Pirates scored most of their runs over the first three innings. Joshua Davis had a two-run single in the first inning to get Whitworth on the board. Tyler Pfeffer added a two-run double in the second to increase the lead to 4-0. Paul Miller’s RBI single in the third made it 5-0 in favor of the Bucs.
Chase Miller scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third for C of I’s first run. But Nick Motsinger extended the lead back to 6-1 with an RBI double in the sixth inning.
Pinch hitter Brent Mehling drove in the Coyotes’ second run in the bottom of the sixth and Miller scored his second run of the game on a fielder’s choice in the seventh.
Taylor Isadore tossed a perfect eighth and Jason Renner a perfect ninth to shut down any hope of a rally. Renner’s save is his second of the season.
Davis finished 2-4 with two RBIs for the Pirates, while Motsinger was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Game 2 – College of Idaho 7, Whitworth 3
Whitworth led 3-0 before College of Idaho scored seven times over its final four at-bats.
Nate Lamberty picked up his first career RBI single to kick start Whitworth’s rally in the fifth inning. Caleb Hughes drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Nick Motsinger singled home the Bucs’ final run of the rally.
The Coyotes got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly. Sam Johnston’s sac fly in the sixth started a three-run rally that would give College of Idaho the lead. Pinch runner Seth Champlin scored on a throwing error and Zach Fabricius drove in the eventual game-winning run with the Coyotes third sacrifice fly of the game.
College of Idaho added another run in the seventh and two more in the eighth inning on Chase Miller’s two-run single.
Spencer Ansett was the hard-luck losing pitcher for the Pirates. He allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 5.1 innings. He did not walk a batter. Nick Scourey and Blake Thoren tossed the final 2.2 innings.
Markus Lively earned the win on the mound after allowing three runs on four hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out six and walked none. Kyle Garvin gets the save after giving up only one hit in 3.0 innings of relief.?
