CALDWELL, Idaho – Whitworth’s rally from a 6-1 deficit came up short as the visiting Pirates fell 6-5 to College of Idaho on Friday afternoon at Wolfe Field.

Josh Davis went 2-4 and drove in a pair of runs for Whitworth. The Bucs dropped to 2-3 while the Coyotes improved to 5-4.

Three doubles led to a three-run first inning for College of Idaho. Nick Muncy and Mitch Skaggs each doubled and scored in the inning. The Coyotes then added single runs in the second and fifth to open up a 5-0 lead.

Davis got the Pirates on the board in the sixth inning with his first homer of the season, a solo shot. But College of Idaho answered in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Jordan Grubbs.

Whitworth then scored four runs in the top of the eighth to pull close. Nick Motsinger tripled in Paul Miller with the first run and he came around to score on a throwing error. Davis doubled with a pair of runners on base to drive in Gerhard Muelheims. Tyler Pfeffer scored on a fielder’s choice to get Whitworth within a single run. The Coyotes got a strikeout with the potential tying run on third base.

Miller got on base again in the ninth, but could not advance beyond first base.

Carson Blumenthal (1-1) took his first loss of the season after giving up five runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Hector Zavala gave up one run in 2.1 innings of relief and Taylor Isadore threw the final two-thirds of an inning.

Taylor Nicholson (1-1) earned his first win of the year for the Coyotes, going seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Kyle Garvin did not allow a run in 2.0 innings of work and got his first save.

Sam Johnston went 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs for College of Idaho.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
