Pac-12 Dominates 2013-14 Bowl Season

Posted:

Thankfully for the Pac-12, Washington State's disappointing showing in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl was not a sign of things to come for the Conference of Champions in the NCAA bowl season.  Outside of losses by WSU, Stanford, and Arizona State, the Pac-12 had a successful postseason, going a collective 6-3 in bowl games.

Pac-12 Bowl Results

Gildan New Mexico Bowl: Colorado State 48, Washington State 45
Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday breaks a New Mexico Bowl for touchdown passes by throwing five in the first half alone, as finished with six TDs and 410 yards passing in the game. But it was the Rams' late 18-point run over the final 2:52 of the game that killed the Cougars bowl hopes. CSU kicker Jared Roberts nailed a 41-yard field goal as time ran out.

Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl: #25 USC 45, Fresno State 20
The Trojans had a tumultuous 2013 season full of coaching changes but it didn't show on Dec. 21 in Las Vegas, Nev. as No. 25 USC sent the 20th ranked Bulldogs packing up the Interstate-5. Trojan Quarterback Cody Kessler threw for 345 yards four touchdowns, two of which went to Marqise Lee as he finished with 118 yards receiving in what could be his final game in the Cardinal and Gold.

Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl: Oregon State 38, Boise State 23
OSU ran up what proved to be an insurmountable 31-6 lead in the first half over the Chris Petersen-less Broncos thanks to two fumble returns touchdowns. The pride of Pleasanton, Calif., Sean Mannion, finished with 259 yards passing an 1 TD for the Beavers, as Storm Woods had 107 yards rushing and Oregon State's lone score in the second half.

Fight Hunger BowlWashington 31, BYU 16
The Huskies were able to take a 21-16 lead into the break due to two Bishop Sankey 11-yard touchdown runs and a 100-yard kickoff return TD from John Ross, then held the Cougars scoreless in the second half to secure the win for interim head coach Marques Tuiasosopo. The former Gonzaga Prep Bullpup, Sankey, ran for 95 yards and the two scores and finished with 1,870 yards rushing and 20 TDs in what proved to be his final season as a Husky. Brigham Young's QB Taysom Hill finished with 293 yards passing and 133 yards rushing, he'll be a junior next year.

National University Holiday Bowl: Texas Tech 37, #14 Arizona State 23
Sun Devil quarterback Tyler Kelly and running back D.J. Foster combined for 267 yards rushing and two scores but it wasn't enough to counter the performance by Texas Tech QB Davis Webb as he threw for 403 yards and four touchdowns. ASU's failed opportunity to close out the first half with points when it had the ball at the 1-yard line with under a minute to play in the second quarter proved to be detrimental as the Sun Devils couldn't comeback from a 13-27 deficit going into the locker rooms.

Valero Alamo Bowl: #10 Oregon 30, Texas 7
No. 10 Oregon spoiled the final win the Longhorns were looking to give longtime head coach Mack Brown thanks to one man, sophomore quarterback Marcus Mariota. The Ducks' QB showed off a healthy knee as he ran for 133 yards and passed for 253 more and a score. Two Oregon interceptions returned for touchdowns book ended the scoring as Texas was never able to get its passing game going. Malcom Brown was the lone highlight for the Longhorns as he ground out 130 tough rushing yards vs. the Oregon defense.

AdvoCare V100 Independence BowlArizona 42, Boston College 19
Ka'Deem "The Dream" Carey finished the 2013 season with 169 yards rushing and two touchdowns and stole the show as he out-dueled Boston College RB and Heisman Finalist Andre Williams, who only ran for 75 yards and one score today, Dec. 31. Trey Griffey, the son of future MLB Hall of Fame outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., finished with two TD receptions as the Wildcats rolled in Shreveport, La.

Hyundai Sun Bowl: #17 UCLA 42, Virginia Tech 12
Brett Hundley dazzled fans in El Paso, Texas with four total touchdowns on 226 yards passing and another 161 yards rushing in what some have speculated could be his final game in a Bruins uniform. Virginia Tech kept the game close--the Hokies only trailed 10-14 at the end of the third quarter--until UCLA opened the floodgates with 28 points in the fourth quarter.

Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio: #4 Michigan State 24, #5 Stanford 20

Michigan State stopped Stanford on 4th-and-1 with less than two minutes to play to secure the first Rose Bowl victory in 26 years for the Spartans. Quarterback Connor Cook torched the Cardinal through the air, throwing for a career-high 332 yards and a go-ahead fourth quarter touchdown. The Cardinal jumped out to a 10-0 lead early, but Michigan State responded, outscoring Stanford 24-10 after the first quarter.
