Bulldogs Maintain Rankings; Bell Sidelined

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. (December 30, 2013 – http://www.gozags.com) – The news was mixed for Gonzaga University's men's basketball team Monday.

On the positive side the Bulldogs retained their No. 21 USA Today and No. 24 Associated Press rankings.

However, the Bulldogs also learned they will be without guard Gary Bell Jr., for four-to-six weeks with a fractured right (shooting) hand suffered in Saturday's win over Santa Clara University.

Kyle Dranginis, a 6-5 sophomore from Nampa, Idaho, is expected to get the start tonight when the Zags entertain the University of San Francisco.

Bell injured the hand in the early moments of Saturday's game and the initial diagnosis was he was fine and returned to action. However, by the time the game was over there was considerable swelling on the top of the hand and he was sent for x-rays. He was seen by a hand specialist Monday and the diagnosis confirmed.

Bell, averaging 12.7 ppg and 3.2 rpg while starting all 13 games to date, is in a splint. The hand will be x-rayed next week and re-evaluated regularly throughout the healing process.

The Bulldogs held onto their rankings following the 74-60 win over SCU to open West Coast Conference play. The University of Arizona remained atop both polls but the margin slipped in the AP rankings, Arizona receiving 60-of-65 first-place votes, three less than last week. The Wildcats once again received 30-of-32 first-place votes in the USA Today balloting. Syracuse received the five remaining votes in the AP voting of sportswriters, with Syracuse and Ohio State University each receiving one first-place vote in the USA Today balloting of coaches.
