Gonzaga Women Bury Badgers 70-55

by Gonzaga Athletics Media Relations

MADISON, Wis. – The Gonzaga University women’s basketball team once again showed its depth Tuesday as 12 players contributed big minutes and nine scored crucial points in its 70-55 victory over the University of Wisconsin at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis.

The 22/23 ranked Bulldogs improved their record to 8-1 on the year and won their sixth-straight, while the Badgers were dealt their first home loss of the season and fell to 6-3 overall.

Senior point guard Jazmine Redmon and junior guard Danielle Walter were they keys to success Tuesday as Redmon scored a season-high 15-points, including 10-points in the all-important second half, while Walter also broke a season- high with 10 points, including eight points in the final six minutes of the contest.

Gonzaga had a strong start to the game once again, running out to a 10-2 advantage with less than five minutes gone in the game. Redmon was the catalyst in the start, beginning the game with a layup and added a 3-pointer. The Badgers only points during the opening moments came from the free throw line.

Wisconsin finally hit a field goal – at the 13:04 mark of the first – and that opened the flood gates, starting a 10-0 run of its own to take the 12-10 edge at 11:09. The spurt was capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers by Jacki Gulczynski and AnnMarie Brown.

The game would see-saw back and forth for the remainder of the half with five ties and four lead changes. The largest lead in the final 10 minutes by either team was four points, at 22-18 after Zag junior Sunny Greinachermade a layup at 5:24.

The Badgers went into the locker room with the one point advantage at 29-28 after Taylor Wurtz drained a 3-pointer with eight seconds on the clock.

Nine players scored in the opening stanza for Gonzaga, led by Greinacher’s six and Redmon’s five.

A quick and explosive start to the second half by the Bulldogs had them regain the lead and their largest of the game at nine points. It was the play of both juniors Keani Albanez and Lindsay Sherbert that gave Gonzaga the 40-31 advantage at 16:47. Each drained a 3-pointer and made a layup in the opening minutes.

Wisconsin got within five points of Gonzaga’s lead but a 10-0 spurt push the Zags lead above double-digits for the first time at 52-40. Redmon started things off with a huge 3-pointer and closed it out with another 3-pointer.

The Badgers stayed close only because of the free throw line. In the final 11 minutes, Wisconsin hit eight free throws but on the flipside, only made three field goals.

It was Walter - who came in for Redmon after she was hit with her fourth foul - that kept Wisconsin at bay. She entered with 5:40 remaining and quickly drained a three-ball to put Gonzaga’s edge above double-figures again. She would score eight of the Zags final 13 points.

Besides Redmon and Walter, Greinacher chipped in 12 points, while Albanez added 10.

Wisconsin was led by Morgan Paige with 19.

The Bulldogs continue a tough stretch playing at Stanford University Saturday, Dec. 14. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and will be televised on the PAC-12 Network.
