Washington to Play BYU in Fight Hunger Bowl

Posted: Updated:

Washington has accepted an invitation to play in the Fight Hunger Bowl. The Huskies (8-4 overall) will take on BYU Dec. 27 at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

The game will kick off at 6:30 p.m. PT and air live on ESPN television.

"This year's matchup will be one of the very best in the history of our game," said Gary Cavalli, executive director of the Fight Hunger Bowl. "We have two 8-4 teams, two nationally known programs, both with explosive offenses and big name players.  We expect a great game, a huge crowd and terrific TV ratings.

"Our Board, staff and volunteers couldn't be happier about landing Washington and BYU," Cavalli continued. "We look forward to welcoming these two fine teams and providing them with a memorable week in San Francisco."

The Huskies, who will be led in the bowl game by interim coach Marques Tuiasosopo, are making their fourth straight bowl appearance after having missed out on the postseason for seven straight years (2003-09). Washington will make its first appearance in the Fight Hunger Game and will be taking on the Cougars for the ninth time.

BYU, now playing as an independent team, also compiled a regular-season record of 8-4.

"We're very excited to have been selected to play in the Fight Hunger Bowl," UW athletic director Scott Woodward said. "The game will be a new experience for our program and the many Husky fans in the Bay Area, and I am confident it will be a great one. Interim coach Tuiasosopo will have the team ready to compete against a great opponent."

The UW-BYU series dates back to 1985, when the Cougars beat Washington, 31-3, in Provo. Washington then won four in a row over BYU, winning in 1986, 1996, 1997 and 1998. BYU has won the last three in a row, besting the Dawgs in 1999, 2008 and 2010. The Fight Hunger Bowl will mark the first time that the two will have met in a bowl game.

The Huskies, who are currently scheduled to return to the practice field next Friday, Dec. 13, will depart for San Francisco on Dec. 22.
