The Best Rivalry West Of The Mississippi; Washington State Overcome Vandals Late 67-66

When two teams are separated by less than 10 miles their contests have a habit of ending in something spectacular. That is exactly what happened tonight, Dec. 7, in Moscow when the Washington State University men's basketball team overcame the University of Idaho late to win 67-66 in the 268th meeting between these border rivals.

The Vandals (4-5) lead for most of the first half. It looked like the Cougars (4-4) were going to force a tie going into the break only to have Idaho junior Mike Scott drain a three-pointer as time ran out to give the Vandals the 36-33 lead going into the locker room.

Idaho extended its lead to 10 points early on in the second half, but WSU was able to keep the Vandals within six points for the majority of the first 10 minutes.

Freshman Sekou Wiggs slammed home a missed shot with just over 8 minutes left in the game to give Idaho a 7-point advantage.

Then things got interesting.

Only a minute later Washington State narrowed the lead to two thanks to junior Davonte' Lacy drilling a crowd-silencing dagger from behind the arc.

The Cougars continued to bring the game within 1 point as the Vandals tried to expand on their lead. With just under two minutes left Lacy drained both of his free throws to give WSU the 63-62 advantage.

Senior Stephen Madison was fouled and made 1-of-2 from the free throw line to help the Vandals knot it back up at 63, only to have junior Royce Woolridge give the Cougars the lead back when he knifed through the lane and dished in a layup to move the score to 65-63.

Madison received a chance to redeem himself after an over-the-back foul was called on sophomore Junior Longrus, he nailed both of his free shots to make it 66-65 with 33.4 seconds left in the game.

Senior D.J. Shelton gave the Cougs the lead again when he made a both of his shots from the charity stripe with 7.8 seconds to play.

On the final play of the game Idaho senior Glen Dean drove the ball down the court to the baseline and found junior Connor Hill in the corner for the three-point attempt, but the shot was long and took a high bounce off of the rim as the buzzer rang out to seal Washington State's victory.

The Vandals shot 25-of-31 from the free throw line in the game. Madison went 9-of-10 from the line and had team-high's with 16 points and 34 minutes played.

Lacy had an off shooting night, going 8-of-17 from the field, but he still managed to score a game-high 23 points and help the Cougars win their 11th straight over Idaho. Woolridge dropped in 13 and Shelton finished with a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Vandals will hit the road to face Montana next Wednesday, Dec. 11, in Missoula.

WSU will have an eight day break before it hosts Pepperdine next Sunday, Dec. 15.
