SPOKANE, Wash. -- No football player will ever wear the #34 at Gonzaga Prep.  That jersey number now belongs -- now and forever -- to Steve Gleason.

The former Bullpup great, who was a standout linebacker in the Greater Spokane League, had his jersey retired in a ceremony on Tuesday.  Gleason is battling ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, after being diagnosed in January 2011.  While he was being honored with a jersey presented by Gonzaga Prep head football coach Dave McKenna, Gleason also presented checks with money raised from Team Gleason fundraisers.  One of the checks is being used for a scholarship fund for a Gonzaga Prep student affected by a spinal injury.  The other checks will help local agencies committed to helping ALS patients

Gleason, who attended Tuesday's ceremony with his wife and two-year-old son, will likely be in New Orleans at his home during the public ceremony when Gonzaga Prep takes on Mead October 5th.
