Edwall Teen Ready to Race Against Waltrip

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Braeden Havens is getting ready to celebrate his 20th birthday in August by trading paint with Michael Waltrip.

Oh, to be young again.

SWX caught up with Havens at Spokane County Raceway, while the Edwall native was testing for a series of races next month that will take him from Post Falls to Monroe, and then back to his home track in Airway Heights.  Those will be his first races in his new car, after renting a car last season, when he finished third among rookies in points in the K&N Pro West Series (15th overall).

"We have a new chassis," said Havens, who attended Christian Heritage in Edwall. "It used to be a Nationwide Tour car.  It has Danica Patrick green on it, so we're guessing it was one of Danica Patrick's cars."

Havens is hoping to someday race amongst the best of the best in NASCAR: Jimmy Johnson, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick.  But first, he'll have to ply his trade against other up-and-comers.  One of his biggest tests to date will come August 24th in the Toyota/Napa Auto Parts 150 at Spokane County Raceway.  Waltrip, a NASCAR legend who has won the Daytona 500 twice (2001, 2003), will be the featured driver in that race.

"I know what to look for," said Havens. "These guys are tough competitors. I just look to get around them and win.  I raced with Michael Waltrip a few times last year.  He's the best competitor I've raced against.  He is a tough guy to beat.  He'll be fast here."

Mark your calendars.  Saturday, August 24th may be the day Waltrip comes to Spokane, but it's also when one of the city's shining stars will be looking to make his move on a living legend.
