Belete Assefa, 22, of Ethiopia used a huge kick at the end to win the elite men's race at Bloomsday in an unofficial time of 34:21.
Assefa became the first Ethiopian to win Bloomsday. Nearing the seven-mile mark, though, Assefa was trailing Emmanuel Bett of Kenya -- who finished unofficially in 34:33 -- before he turned on the jets and won the race with a comfortable lead.
"The race is very good," Assefa said. "[Bett] is very strong."
Buzunesh Deba of Ethiopia won the elite women's race, as the 25-year-old opened a comfortable lead midway through the course and crossed the finish line in an unofficial time of 39:53 without being contested.
"Pretty good, but I live in New York; I train with hot weather and it's not difficult for me," Deba said of the warm weather. "It was good."
