Gonzaga Prep Claims Important GSL Win Over Mead

Updated:

No one wants to lose. But perhaps the best thing for the Gonzaga Prep baseball was a dismal four-hit defeat to Mt. Spokane last week.

Sure, it's been a small sample size, but in the two games since being blanked, the Bullpups' offense has erupted.

The latest offensive explosion came on Tuesday in a 15-7 win over Mead High School, as Gonzaga Prep (14-1, 12-1 GSL) used 15 hits to pull away from the Panthers (11-4, 9-4). It is the first career win for any Gonzaga Prep player at Mead.

"After Mt. Spokane stymied us, I think our guys were a little bit grumpy," Gonzaga Prep head coach Brian Munhall said. "We responded really well against Mt. Spokane and again today. Our approach is right. We're on time, we're getting a pitch that we can handle, looking for it, sticking with what we do and had a lot of barrels today."

"Lose one, 2-0; I mean four hits in the game, couple errors," said senior Zach Bonneau about the loss to Mt. Spokane. "Then we bounced back, put 20 runs on the board. I mean, that's not common. We just hit the ball really well and it carried over to today's win."

Jordan Rathbone led Gonzaga Prep with four hits, including a double, while Bonneau added a triple, double and single.

Max Graves pitched five innings for the win.

Dan Mattingly and Jordan McGown combined for four of Mead's eight hits, but the Panthers also committed five errors.

The win was key for the Bullpups as they start to solidify the top spot in the league standings. With two weeks left in the regular season, Gonzaga Prep holds a two-game lead over Mt. Spokane and a three-game advantage over Mead and Ferris.

"It's a big win," Munhall said. "We knew the last two weeks were enormous -- Mt. Spokane, Mead, U-High. They keep coming"
