PULLMAN, Wash. – Stanford scored in four of the final-five innings and the No. 23 Cardinal defeated host Washington State 9-3 in Pac-12 Conference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Friday.

Danny Diekroeger collected three hits for Stanford (13-8, 3-2 Pac-12). Dean McArdle (2-1) earned the win in relief with 2 1/3 innings of work. Tanner Chleborad (3-4), who retired the first-12 men he faced, gave up four runs in 6 1/3 innings and took the loss.

"This was the worst game we played this season," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We didn't get enough big hits. Our defense was sloppy and our bullpen was not good."

After the Cardinal broke through for a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Cougars rallied for three in the bottom half to take a 3-2 lead.

Brett Jacobs led off the frame and was hit by a pitch facing Stanford starter Bobby Zarubin. With one out, Jason Monda singled against McArdle and Trek Stemp was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After Yale Rosen fouled out, Nick Tanielu drilled a double into the right field corner to clear the bases and put the Cougars on top.

Stanford tied the game with a run in the sixth, but the Cougars looked to have a response when Ian Sagdal led off the bottom of the inning with a triple. However, McArdle retired Jacobs, Trace Tam Sing and Monda to end the threat.

The Cardinal took a 5-3 lead in the seventh. The Cougars had runners at first and third with one out in the seventh and first and second with one out in the eighth, but failed to score. In the seventh, Collin Slaybaugh's bid for extra bases with two outs was denied on a running catch in the right-center field gap by Stanford right fielder Austin Slater.

Stanford took advantage of wildness by the Washington State bullpen to tack on four runs in the ninth as the Cougars walked four.

The series concludes, Saturday with first pitch scheduled for noon. Washington State will retire John G. Olerud's No. 18 in a ceremony prior to the game. Fans are encouraged to be in their seat by 11:30 a.m. to enjoy the festivities.
