Whitworth Softball At NTC Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Whitworth softball team closed out its Florida trip with a 6-3 loss to the No. 19 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a 3-1 loss to No. 6 Luther College at the NTC Spring Games on Thursday.

Whitworth falls to 18-14 overall this season. Game 1 – UW-Whitewater 6, Whitworth 3

Whitworth came out swinging in the first inning against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. After freshman Megan John singled up the middle, senior Jamie Brunner stepped in the batter's box and sent a pitch over the center field wall for a two-run home run. Whitworth led 2-0 after the first half inning. The Warhawks answered with a two-run homer of their own in the bottom of the first inning to tie it 2-2.

Whitewater went ahead in the bottom of the second inning and then scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to go ahead 6-2. After a scoreless sixth inning, senior Jessica Ross tripled to right center and scored on a single to left field from sophomore Riley Fritz, pulling the Bucs within three, 6-3 with two outs. Brunner followed Fritz's single with one of her own to left field, putting freshman pinch runner Brittany Connor on third and giving Whitworth runners on the corners. Unfortunately, the rally was cut short when senior Heather Hesselgesser lined out to the second baseman.

Bekka Houda (6-0) earning the win, striking out five of the 31 batters she faced and allowing nine hits in seven innings. Sophomore Megan Fisher (2-3) took the loss, giving up four earned runs on two hits with a strikeout in 3.1 innings.
At the plate, Jamie Brunner hit her fourth home run of the season, while going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Game 2 – Luther 3, Whitworth 1. Stats are unavailable at this time and will be sent as soon as possible.

Whitworth will resume Northwest Conference play next weekend as the Pirates host a four-game series with Willamette University on April 6-7.
